Common Sleep Disorders

Sleeping disorders are issues that affect a variety of sleep factors including quality, length and reliability. These issues can lead to problems with work, school and social activities. Some sleeping disorders include:

INSOMNIA – Insomnia effects the length of sleep that we get. Most people will experience insomnia during their lives. Sleeping pills are effective against insomnia in the short-term, however CBT-I (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia) is a much better solution.

NARCOLEPSY – Narcolepsy is a condition that means people fall asleep during the middle of the day, regardless of whether they got goodnights sleep the night before.

SLEEP APNEA – Sleep apnea is the condition of experienced periods of interrupted breathing during sleep. Weight loss and not sleeping on your back can help with this condition, but a special device may be required should it continue.

SNORING – Snoring is definitely the most common sleeping disorder. Without treatment it can lead to a feeling of tiredness, for both yourself, and anyone else who is able to hear it.

To better your sleep pattern and quality, and to potentially avoid sleeping disorders, there are measures that can be taken.

LYING IN BED – If you have been at work, and your brain is going at 100mph, lying in bed awake until you eventually drift off will take longer to get to sleep. Instead, do something that sooths your mind. Maybe something that you know always makes you tired.

NAPPING – Try to avoid napping in the day. Short naps under 30 minutes are okay, but only if you’re extremely tired. Napping in the late afternoon/evening will decrease the effectiveness of your sleep. It’s best not to nap after 3pm in the afternoon.

THINKING NEGATIVELY – Thinking negatively before you go to sleep will increase the level of stress you have in your body. Once asleep, your body will have an added amount of stress to try to get rid of, which affects the effectiveness of your body dealing with its other duties.

So, in summary, sleep is important. All we need to do is looks after ourselves, and our bodies will do the rest. If we do that, not only will the sleep we get be enjoyable, but beneficial to our lives.
