The impact of guilt on self-esteem and self-worth
Guilt can really mess with how we see ourselves and how we feel about ourselves. When we feel guilty, we start to believe that we’re a bad person or that we’ve done something really wrong. It’s like a dark cloud hanging over us, making us feel like we’re not good enough.
This feeling of guilt can really bring down our self-esteem. We start to think that we’re worthless or that we don’t deserve good things in life. We might constantly criticize ourselves and believe that we’re incapable or unworthy of success or happiness. It’s like our self-confidence takes a big hit, and we start doubting our abilities and worth.
Guilt can also make us question our own judgment and decision-making. We might lose trust in ourselves and become hesitant to make choices or take action. We might worry that we’ll just mess things up again or hurt others, so we become really cautious and afraid of making any mistakes.
All of this can make us feel really down and affect how we interact with others. We might withdraw from social situations or avoid people because we think they’ll see us as a bad person. It becomes harder to believe that others genuinely care about us or accept us because we’re carrying this guilt around.
