Sleep architecture: Stages and cycles
Sleep architecture refers to the way sleep is structured and organized. It involves different stages and cycles that happen while we sleep. There are two main types of sleep: NREM sleep and REM sleep.
NREM sleep has three stages. The first stage is light sleep (N1), where we transition from being awake to being asleep. The second stage is the main part of NREM sleep (N2), where our brain waves slow down, and our body rests and repairs itself. The third stage is deep sleep (N3), which is the most restorative stage and helps with physical rejuvenation and growth.
After NREM sleep, we enter REM sleep. During this stage, our eyes move rapidly, and our brain becomes very active. This is when we have vivid dreams. REM sleep is important for processing emotions and consolidating memories.
Throughout the night, we go through multiple cycles of these stages, starting with NREM sleep and progressing to REM sleep. Deep sleep is more common in the early cycles, while REM sleep becomes longer in the later cycles.
Analyzing sleep architecture helps us understand the quality of our sleep and identify any sleep disorders. Doctors use techniques like polysomnography to study the different stages of sleep and determine if there are any issues.
