General AI (Strong AI)

General AI, also known as Deep or Strong AI is AI that is capable of mimicking natural intelligence with some degree cognitive ability, with the intelligence of adapting to its environment and solving problems that might arise as a result. At current, this AI has not been created yet. In order for General AI to become a reality, scientists and engineers would need to come up with a way of making machines conscious, which as you might imagine is no easy task.

One of the reasons that it’s so difficult is that the human brain is the model of General AI, and unfortunately, there is already a lack of comprehensive knowledge about the functionality of the human brain. To give an example of how difficult this is, Fujitsu, one of the leading tech companies in the world, built ‘K’, one of the fastest supercomputers ever made. Despite this, however, it took 40 minutes to simulate a single second of neural activity. Whilst potentially possible to create, General AI will need to come a long way before they can be put to commercial use.

There are other types of AI, however, these types are the ‘AI will rise up and enslave humanity’ types, but more on that later.

Unlike Narrow AI, which is specialized in particular tasks, General AI has broad and versatile intelligence. Here are some key characteristics of General AI:

1. Human-Like Intelligence: General AI is designed to emulate human intelligence in its entirety, including the ability to reason, understand context, learn from experience, and apply knowledge to a wide range of tasks.

2. Broad Range of Tasks: It can perform any intellectual task that a human can, from understanding and conversing in natural language to problem-solving, creativity, and adapting to novel situations.

3. Self-Learning and Adaptation: General AI can learn from experience and adapt to new challenges without requiring extensive reprogramming. It possesses a form of self-improvement and autonomous learning.

4. Understanding Context: It can understand the context and nuances of a situation, allowing it to make complex decisions based on a deep comprehension of the world.

5. Emotions and Empathy: Some conceptions of General AI include the ability to understand and exhibit emotions, empathy, and social intelligence, making it more relatable and capable of interacting with humans on a human level.

6. Autonomy: Strong AI can operate autonomously, making decisions and taking actions without human intervention. It has a high degree of self-awareness and agency.

7. Creative and Innovative: It has the potential to generate new ideas, solve novel problems, and contribute to scientific and artistic endeavors.

8. Generalization: General AI can generalize knowledge and skills across different domains, applying what it has learned in one area to excel in others.

9. Consciousness: Some discussions of General AI include the possibility of consciousness, although this is a topic of philosophical and ethical debate.

10. Not Yet Achieved: As of my current knowledge, the development of General AI remains a significant challenge in the field of artificial intelligence. While there have been advances in various AI domains, creating a system that truly possesses human-level general intelligence has not been realized.

In summary, General AI represents the aspiration to create AI systems that possess the full spectrum of human intelligence and capabilities. Achieving this level of AI would have profound implications for technology, society, and the nature of work and human-AI interactions. It remains an area of active research and speculation in the field of AI, with many technical, ethical, and philosophical questions to address.
